Monday 2nd November 2009: Rev Dr Canon Chancellor Giles Fraser

I think this was one of the finest examples of totally contradicting yourself brought to us by a Thought for the Day reader of late.

Tuesday 3rd November 2009: Indarjit Singh

Could any of us give a flip about what Guru Nanak would or wouldn’t approve of? You’re too late Sikhs. If we don’t give a flip what Jesus would or wouldn’t approve of, we sure as heck don’t give a flip what Nanak thought. I don’t even care enough to swear about it today.

Wednesday 4th November 2009: Rt Rev Tom Butler

“It seems pretty obvious that Christians have no special expertise when it comes to matters of finance.” YOU DON’T SAY? After a more than year of banging on about it at regular intervals YOU’VE JUST REALISED THAT. And despite recognising that fact YOU’RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT IT ANYWAY. Excellent, Tom, that’s just excellent.

Thursday 5th November 2009: Rhidian Brook

Brian Draper or Rhidian Brook? I had to check. They’re probably just the same person. The same boring soft voiced family man who due to the decrepit vintage of the other readers sound like happening dudes by comparison. By objective measurements they’re still boring as fuck but if you squint your ears you can just [...]

Friday 6th November 2009: Rev Rosemary Lain-Priestley

Rosemary suggests, in light of the blood recently shed in Afghanistan, that we should suspect everyone (but not too much) and trust everyone (but not too much). Nothing like cryptically contrary advice to make nothing seem simpler.

Saturday 7th November 2009: Canon David Winter

YES we should learn from the mistakes of history but NO we never do, though we might perhaps have a chance of doing so if so many PRIESTS weren’t so fond of expounding the CHRISTIAN concept of a JUST WAR. Just a thought.

Monday 9th November 2009: Rev Canon Dr Giles Fraser

Are you using your freedom properly? Because, as Fraser reminds us, we are only really free to do as we ought to. For instance, the Bible tells us that we ought to treat some people like property. That’s right, with freedom comes responsibility. Are you being mean enough to your slave?

Tuesday 10th November 2009: Dr Indarjit Singh

Okay Indarjit. I get it. I get that Sikhism is one of the more religiously tolerant of religions. You tell me every week how much you love people from other god clubs. Why don’t you just have a big interfaith orgy and be done with? Broadcast it, I don’t care, it’s radio anyway. Just get [...]

Wednesday 11th November 2009: Rt Rev Tom Butler

Well. What can you say? After a recent run of some fairly reasonable readings, Tom decided that it was time to drop the G-bomb with aplomb. How will we end wars fought against religious fanatics? By believing more fervently in God! Of course.

Thursday 12th November 2009: Rhidian Brook

Of all the things going on in the world this week Rhidian used his 3 BBC minutes to bitch about how some lucky lottery winners don’t deserve it really because it’s a meaningless, empty and immoral anyway. What a self-righteous, sour-graped, squinched sphincter of a reading.

Friday 13th November 2009: Rev Rosemary Lain-Priestley

I don’t feel like I was in the target audience for this reading. Of course, all the readings are supposed to be from a religious perspective and often focus on religion in topic. But this one was for believers, people who have hearts, minds, bodies, and spirits. I just have a mind and a body. [...]

Saturday 14th November 2009: Canon David Winter

It’s Monday night and I’m writing Saturday’s Afterthought. I did attempt to do this yesterday, but I kept losing my concentration. THEY HAVE BORING VOICES. But this is a somewhat startling topic, so let me try again.

Monday 16th November 2009: Rev Dr Alan Billings

Oh, Interfaith Week. Of course. Will it just be Singh and Billings, or will more of our intrepid droners give us their take on it? Perhaps we should welcome it. If they talked to each other more often, maybe they’d do less talking at us.

17th-21st November 2009: Catch-up

Another unannounced hiatus. Oh well, it’s only a blog. But we have this week received news that the BBC will not be taking on board any of the points made by complainants to the BBC Trust. Well done to all those who went through the hassle of complaining to the Trust. Thank you. BBC Trust, [...]

Monday 23rd November 2009: Rev John Bell

Floods have devastated parts of Cumbria. Someone on the news described it as a ‘flood of biblical proportions’ and John Bell thought, ‘Ace! That gives me the perfect current event to speak about for 3 minutes from a Christian perspective’. But he could at least have brushed up on his Bible beforehand.

Tuesday 24th November 2009: Vishvapani

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Origin of Species, happy Buddhist birthday to you! Yes, every once in while we get one of our special religionistas using their special religionista platform to obsequiously cuddle up to science; most frequently in the form of Darwin. Today was Vishvapani’s turn.

Wednesday 25th November 2009: Rev Dr Alan Billings

In this reading Billings reinforced the notion of religion-as-comfort-blanket, which I hardly disagree with. Personally, I prefer a real comfort blanket, the sort you can literally wrap around you and warm up in. They just seem a bit more substantial.

Thursday 26th November 2009: Dr Mona Siddiqui

I think there’s a valid point somewhere in Siddiqui’s reading. I don’t think she posed it well, and I don’t think she did herself any service by shrugging off the qur’anic support for much of the abuse and disrespect many Muslim women face. But it’s hardly the case that gender relations and the treatment of [...]

Friday 27th November 2009: Lord Sir Chief Sack Baron Rabbi Jonathan

In a really convoluted and holier than thou fashion the Lord Sir Chief Sack Baron Rabbi Jonathan informed us in this reading that society should be fair. For instance, is it really fair to speak on a publicly funded platform denied to those who don’t hold one of a set of six religious beliefs? No, [...]

Saturday 28th November 2009: Rev Roy Jenkins

Did he really even say anything? I’m not sure. Who cares? It was Saturday anyway. It did sound like he was sticking up for the people who took us to war in Iraq though. Let’s not get too carried away, he says.

Monday 30th November 2009: Rev John Bell

A pleasant little holiday yarn from Bell today. He really does like a good singsong, so I don’t think his Vietnamese vacation could have gone any better for him unless Jesus finally turned up and got his Rapture on.
