Thursday 16th October 2008: Rev Rosemary Lain-Priestley

Listen / Read
I’m really glad we have people who are eager to go on national radio, have their voices heard by millions of listeners across the land, to tell us all that we must utilise our ambition to better enrich others with our Giant Sky Fairy-given gifts and aptitudes, and enrich ourselves by fulfilling that potential.

Well I hope Rev Lain-Priestley felt enriched by her reading today. Because I got nothing out of it. Do I have any other thoughts…? No. No, the gesticulatory equivalent of my mental state right now is a shrug of the shoulders. What a ‘meh’ Thought for the Day.

I’m going to read Philip Hensher’s book instead. It might not have won, but it’s set in Sheffield and that’s good enough for me. As for his ambition, he said in the same interview that he’d put money on himself to win, which is doubly ambitious and could even be construed as arrogant. He was complaining that £50,000 isn’t as much money as it used to be, and had bet on himself so that his wager winnings might top up his measly prize winnings. As far as I’m concerned, he’s got a cheek. That’s more than twice the average salary, the greedy bugger. So his silence might have concealed his ambition, but his actions certainly betrayed it.
