So the Today programme has allowed another Christian to respond to Darwin’s 200th birthday, in addition to the Christian, the Muslim and the Jew who already did so earlier in the month, all basically saying the same thing. God evolved us, Darwin rocks almost as much as Jesus, and something about awe and wonder, the end. If Mark Damazer insists on the uniqueness of the slot, why do I always feel like I’m listening to a repeat?

What else did David Attenborough have to say?

It never really occurred to me to believe in God – and I had nothing to rebel against, my parents told me nothing whatsoever. But I do remember looking at my headmaster delivering a sermon, a classicist, extremely clever … and thinking, he can’t really believe all that, can he? How incredible!

Incredible isn’t the word I’d use, but then I am rather uncouth. What do you think goes through Attenborough’s mind when he hears the daily sermons delivered via the public airwaves?

And here we have… the lesser brained bullshitter. His dull, monotonous drone… provides a defence mechanism against the realities of… reality. Simply by opening his mouth… he can bore anyone who might be listening… entirely to death. Some have speculated that his wearisome tones… might be some kind of language. But so far… no one has stayed awake long enough to confirm this.
