Tuesday 30th September 2008: Dr Mona Siddiqui

Listen / Read
It would be inappropriate of me to suffix this one with the indelicate use of language I often indulge myself with. Although I don’t really feel as if I’m in Siddiqui’s intended target audience, on this occasion I’m okay with that because she’s not moralising at me. She can moralise at other Muslims all she likes.

Though I do wonder how many of those she’s referring to, those with intolerant or extremist tendencies, listen to the Today programme. They can’t even get northerners to listen so it’s a stretch to think potential effigy burners are tuning in. So perhaps I am the target audience after all, as a non-Muslim who might benefit from hearing a reassuringly moderate Muslim voice in a cultural climate that makes publishers frightened to print words that might spark international outrage, or worse.

Speaking of which, Chris Morris has been trying to get a show about Jihadists made for ages now. It was rejected by the BBC and Channel 4 (the pussies) so now he’s trying to turn the idea into a film. He’s found producers at WarpFilms and a distributor, now it all just needs paying for so if you want to help out you can email fundingmentalism@warpfilms.com about making a donation.

It is a noble cause. If freedom of religion is a basic human right, then freedom of satire sure as hell is.

I’m sure Dr Siddiqui would agree.
